Can I Replace a Pool Pump Motor by Myself?

Many pool owners wonder if they can replace their  pool pump motor without professional help. The good news is that with some basic tools and a bit of mechanical aptitude, the average homeowner can indeed tackle this task successfully.

Replacing a pool pump motor is a manageable DIY project for those who are moderately handy. While it may seem daunting at first, the process is straightforward and can be accomplished by following step-by-step instructions.  This video tutorial and guide below can provide valuable assistance for those who prefer to see the process in action or have a step-by-step process.

One of the primary benefits of replacing the pump motor yourself is cost savings. Professional installation can be expensive, with quotes ranging from $500 to $700+ for parts and labor. By purchasing the motor and necessary parts yourself and doing the installation, you can potentially save hundreds of dollars (expensive labor rates and part upcharges).

Moreover, taking on this project allows you to familiarize yourself with the inner workings of your pool pump. This knowledge can be invaluable for future maintenance and troubleshooting. You'll gain a better understanding of how the different components work together, making it easier to identify and address potential issues down the line.

How to Replace a Pool Pump Motor

Important Safety Notes:

  • Before beginning any work, unplug the pump from the electrical outlet to avoid shock and product damage.
  • Turn off the water supply to the pump to prevent excessive water spillage during the replacement process.
  • It is highly advised that you do not use power tools for this job.

Tools Required

  1. Socket wrench set (9/16" is most common)
  2. Nut driver or flathead screwdriver
  3. Wrench set (7/16" is most common)
  4. Lubricant

Disassembly

  1. Use the appropriate socket wrench to remove the placement bolts from the seal plate on your pool pump.
  2. Slide the motor out of the housing.
  3. Remove the diffuser by pulling it off.
  4. Remove the back electrical plate using a nut driver or flathead screwdriver.
  5. Remove the capacitor for easier access.
  6. Use the appropriate wrench on the drive shaft to hand-loosen the impeller.
  7. Remove the impeller and seal plate.
  8. Use the socket wrench to loosen the bolts on the motor housing.

Reassembly

  1. Locate the top of the new motor and align it with the motor mounting plate.
  2. Thread the mounting bolts into the motor and tighten with the socket wrench.
  3. Install a new seal into the seal plate, using lubricant on the rubber portion. Be careful not to touch the ceramic plate.
  4. Place the seal plate onto the mounting plate, ensuring the top is facing up.
  5. Remove the bolts on the rear of the motor using the nut driver.
  6. Loosen the capacitor for easier access.
  7. Place the other half of the seal over the shaft on the impeller, ensuring ceramic touches ceramic.
  8. Hand-thread the impeller onto the drive shaft.
  9. Use the appropriate wrench to lock the drive shaft and finish tightening the impeller by hand.
  10. Reposition the capacitor.
  11. Check electrical connections and adjust if necessary (some models are wired for 230V, but can often be changed to 115V).
  12. Reinstall the rear plate and tighten the bolts.
  13. Install the diffuser onto the front of the impeller, ensuring the top is facing up.

Final Installation

  1. Slide the reassembled motor back into the housing, aligning the mounting holes.
  2. Use the socket wrench to reattach the motor to the housing with the mounting bolts.
